A little home game, then some online freerollin'
Had a couple people over for a small game, Pete, Travis, Phil, and Andy. It was straight from the basketball game, so no one had anymoney and we just ended up playin a $1 buyin for 2 hours. I took second, and got my money back. Pete took first.
After a short excursion to the school at 11:30, I sat down at a .02/.04 limit table on pokerchamps. Due to my FUCKING computer freezing up on me, I lost about 6 cents and dropped down to $1.89 in my account. I can't wait till I can deposit!
I end up entered the 1:30 AM freeroll later, and watched conor shoot up to second out of 700 people remaining (originally a 900 person buy-in) and then drop out in 395th. I ended up finishing 105 out of 900 entries, so I didn't do that bad. I generally shoot for top fifth of the field, and I got it this time. For those of you who do percentages, this is a 88.3% finish, which is a B+ in my book.
I don't know if my overall tournament strategy is flawed. I think that I need to play less tight in my tournaments to actually give me the odds to double up sometimes, and other times bust out rather than being a consistant player. 50/900 all the time doesnt pay anything, but 10 800/900s followed by a 15/900 does. I think also that playing limit games is changing the way I play. I'm becoming Less fancy, in a good way. Instead of trapping and slow playing online, I find I can win a lot more by playing straight from the book.
I also noticed something useful today, while playing my home game. Simply because the game had pete and andy in it, there was a lot of pushing around early, which allowed me to play super tight early in the game. And when I did flop the nut straight, I just pushed hard and got andy to call to the turn and pete to call all the way through the river. Also an important read on pete is that he will often smooth call you to the river and then jump all in. He does this in both winning situations, as well as bluffing situations, but much more in winning situations. I would say generally fold to this type of a bet, as its what had me took second tonight.
Here's the big hand of the game, for those who like hand historys. At this point, it was still 3 players, me andy and pete, but this play crippled my stack and was the beginning of my demise. I came in in the big blind with AJo. The flop came QK 7 rainbow, and I checked over to him, and he checked back. A very strange move for pete, but it meant that I put him on two pair, hidden set or absolutely nothing. He bet's draws like crazy, and only slow plays his version of the "nuts" (sets and two pairs) until pushing all in on the river. The turn is a T, and it makes me my straight. I bet out about 40 (5x BB, but blinds were high and that was about 1/4 of my stack). He calls me, and i am safe knowing i have the nuts. The river comes another Q, and I feel confident. I push in another 40, and he thinks and pushes all in. Now he's almost got me covered (all but 12 chips), But I quickly call because I don't put him on the full house. He has QKo, and takes me almost out of the game. Sucks to be me here!
